We are thrilled to announce that we have added a new time for merchandise releases. Starting this week we will be previewing items on Tuesday at 6 PM PST to be released on Wednesday at 10 AM PST. We will still have the usual Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday Exclusive Previews at 6 PM PST along with the Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday New Arrivals at 10 AM PST. Profile: Introducing Our New Photographer, Stacy Gustin!

Little Black Bag is excited to introduce our FABULOUS new photographer Stacy Gustin! We are so thrilled to have her on the team! She the epitome of cool + creative- and takes crazy-amazing product shots. She took the time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions. Read a bit about her below :)

1. How did you get interested in Photography?

I’m not sure. There are pictures of me as a little kid taking photos of things so I guess I was always interested. In college and high school I took photography classes as my electives, and loved the darkroom black and white classes. Then one day while pursuing an B.S. in Psychology I decided to change my major, switch schools and become a photographer.

2. What did you do before joining LBB?

Before joining LBB I worked both as a freelance and staff photographer for Revolve Clothing, Everlane, My Shape, and Kellwood corp which owns Baby Phat, Rebeca Taylor, Jolt Jeans, and a few others.

3. What is your philosophy for fashion photography?

My philosophy on fashion photography is to keep it fun, creative, and to break the rules when ever I feel like it.

4. What are your favorite LBB brands?

I love love love L.A.M.B., Dolce Vita, BCBG, and Steve Madden.

5. What kind of new photos can we expect from LBB?

Expect to see more life style photos since it’s my favorite thing to shoot.

The Contest Rules Glossi

Top 3 submissions as recognized by Little Black Bag panel of stylists will be put to a vote on 4/29/13 at 2 pm PST via the Little Black Bag Facebook Fanpage. Submission with the highest number of votes by 5/1 at 11:59 PM PST will be deemed the winner and announced on 5/2/13.

Winner of contest will be contacted at the "sender" email used to register for LittleBlackBag.com. The person receiving and replying to the winner announcement email will be considered the winner unless they specify another person within the reply email as the winner. Little Black Bag will email the contest prize to the email address supplied by the recipient of the winner announcement email.

Only one entry per email address used to register for the site will be considered for contest entry. No person may enter any contest more than once using multiple email addresses or multiple names.

Claiming of prizes requires redemption of unique gift code within 10 days of being notified of winning at the email used to enter. Failure to redeem the code on LittleBlackBag.com within 10 days shall mean that the winner forfeits the prize. Little Black Bag is not required to award elsewhere any prizes forfeited by the chosen winner(s).

2. Submission of photo, text or other content for Contests

You acknowledge and agree that Little Black Bag shall have no obligation to post, display or otherwise make publicly available any photo or information submitted by you, and may, in its sole and unfettered discretion, remove, edit, modify or delete any photo or information that you submit to Little Black Bag;

Photos or information submitted by you to the Site shall be the property of Little Black Bag, and Little Black Bag shall have no obligation to preserve, return or otherwise make available to you or others any photos or information so submitted.

By entering the contest the user is providing consent for Little Black Bag to use their submission and likeness for promotional purposes.

3. Awarding Prizes

Exchange Gallery Update

A few customers that were trying to select an Exchange Item noticed that the Exchange Gallery was not showing all of the available items that matched the rules for the Exchange Gallery (as described in our other blog post about the Exchange Gallery.) We checked this issue out and found a small issue that was improperly excluding a handful number of products from the Exchange Gallery. The excluded products were no more than a $5 difference in retail value from the Exchange Item and it only affected a small number of products.

This issue was fixed on 4/25, 2PM PST. If you Exchanged an item from the Exchange Gallery between 4/22, 12:01 AM PST and 4/25, 1:59PM, you will be receiving an email from customer service with a coupon code for a free extra item worth up to $20 in your next bag. We apologize for this inconvenience and hope that the extra item will more than make up for this issue.

A Note on Merchandise Releases

Some of you noticed that we released a few Jewelry items as Stylist Picks last night that were supposed to release at 10AM PST this morning. Sometimes during high sales days we may release a few items as Stylist Picks to make sure that we have enough variety in new bags, rather than keep giving you the same stylist picks. We make sure to only release a few units so that we’ve got plenty in stock to release at 10AM.

Shop with Even More Confidence: Improving Quality

In conjunction with the new Exchange Policy we are launching on April 22, we are also rolling out two new merchandise quality improvements to help you shop with even more CONFIDENCE!

1) Improved Merchandise Quality Control: we will be implementing a new set of processes at our warehouse to ensure that the quality of products goes up and damages go down. These processes will be invisible to you as they will happen directly at our warehouse but the net result is that you should see an increase in product quality arriving at your doorstep. This doesn’t mean that we can eliminate all damages but there should certainly be an improvement in quality.

We have monitored our damage rates since launch and they have always been lower than industry standard for eCommerce companies. An “average” order from a typical eCommerce site contains around 1.2 products in a box, whereas the average order on Little Black Bag contains around 4-6 products in a box. This may create the impression that LBB has higher damage rates, when the opposite is actually the case. We feel it is important to always continue improving quality so that Little Black Bag remains an extraordinary place to shop.

2) Holding Reserve Stock Longer for Damages: There is a concept in retailing called “reserve stock,” where companies hold a few units of an item in reserve in case of damages, mis-ships, or other issues. We have always held reserve stock but we released it 7 days after the item sold out (which is why sometimes you see items popping into the gallery that you thought had sold out - this is reserve stock being released.) We will now hold reserve stock for 30 days after an item sells out from the Opening Gallery. So, in the event that you get a damaged item, we will be able to send you a replacement for the same item with greater certainty.

Note that the 30 days starts from the day the item sells out in the Opening Gallery, not the Trading Gallery. So, if an item sells out from the Opening Gallery on March 1 and then you gift an item several times and redeem it on April 15, then you will still have the Gifted Item in your bag but the Reserve Stock will have been released on March 30.

Summary

These changes will make Little Black Bag an even more exciting place to shop and give you even more confidence in our quality and return policies. These changes will begin on April 22 @ 1:00AM PST, in conjunction with the release of our new Exchange Policy.

We Are Listening: Improving the Exchange Policy

Over the past several days I have talked to dozens of customers on the phone, read through hundreds of feedback emails and spent several hours with customers on chat. Listening to customers and improving the site based on feedback has always been a core company value. LBB is all about providing YOU with an amazing experience and standing by our Happiness Guarantee.

I am excited to announce a major new update to the Exchange Policy - all based on your feedback. The new Exchange Policy will be released on Monday, April 22 at 1:00 AM PST. I will be hosting a video Q&A to talk about the new Exchange Policy on Monday, 04/15/2013 at 2PM PST / 5PM EST

Exchange Policy

Our original goal with the exchange policy improvement was to allow you to select your own exchange item. We think this is an important goal. After all, you worked hard to trade for an item and you should have control over what you get in exchange. With that in mind, I am thrilled to announce the details of our NEW Exchange Policy Update. Beginning on Monday, April 22 at 1:00AM PST, the Exchange Policy will work in the following way:

If you return an item, you will go to the “Exchange Gallery” - a new section of the site where you can select an item of YOUR choice.
If you don’t have an Open Bag: you can Open a New Bag with any of the Exchange Gallery items – all you pay is S&H.
If you have an Open Bag: you can Add an item into your Open Bag for no additional S&H.

The Exchange Gallery will work as follows:

Category: The category of the items in the Exchange Gallery are the same as the item that was returned. For example, if you returned a handbag, you will see handbags in the Exchange Gallery. If we have a limited selection of items in that category then we will show items from other categories.
Retail Value/Add to Bag Price: The Exchange Gallery items are equal to or less than the Retail Value and “Add to Bag” price of the item that was returned. For example, if you returned a $100 Retail Value handbag with an “Add to Bag” price of $49, you will see ALL the handbags of up to $100 of Retail Value and $49 in “Add to Bag” price in the Exchange Gallery.
Time: The items in the Exchange Gallery have been released for at least 24 hours.
In order to make this change possible, starting on April 22 we will charge all bags as soon as they are opened, rather than when they ship. This is necessary in order to ensure that all items that show up on the site are paid for.

This puts the control over Exchange items back in YOUR hands. What does this mean for you?

If you trade up to a $1,000 Bag and you send back a $100 handbag then you will be able to select a $100 retail value handbag in exchange.
If you get a size 6 pair of shoes and you want a different size or a different style, you will be able to do so.
The new Exchange Policy will apply to damages as well, but without the S&H costs.
You can continue shopping with complete confidence: if you return an item between now and April 22, we will hold all of the items at our warehouse until April 22, at which point we will process your exchange and you will receive an email with a link to the Exchange Gallery.
Bonus for existing returns: as a gesture of goodwill, If you returned an item and it was converted to Merchandise Exchange Credit, we will be giving you an additional 50% of Merchandise Exchange Credit. For example, if you had a $10 Merchandise Exchange Credit from a previous item, you will get an extra $5 of credit. You will get this bonus whether you used the Exchange Credit or not. If you have unused Exchange credit in your account you should feel free to use it and you will get the bonus. You will see this credit in your account on April 22.

Introducing the VIP Program, Improved Exchange Policy and other changes

Hi everyone,

I am thrilled to announce the launch of several major new improvements to the site based on YOUR feedback. These changes will go live on Wednesday, 3/27 at 11:59PM PST but I am announcing the details a few days ahead of time. Additionally, to commemorate the launch of VIP we are adding 3 Beauty Bonus Items into every bag that is opened from 3/27 at 11:59PM PST until supplies last.

The New VIP Program

Many of our customers have told us that committing to $29.95 or $49.95 per month is too much – and others have asked us to expand our merchandise offerings to include leather handbags, shoes and higher end designer brands. In order to make this possible, I am thrilled to announce that we are moving all our existing members to the new VIP membership program. The new membership program works as follows:

Greater Savings: VIP’s save up to 25% extra, for nearly 70% off retail.
Lower Priced Membership: No more $29.95 or $49.95 memberships. Instead, for $9.95/Month, you get $10.00 in Merchandise Credit to Spend or Save. You can use this Credit to Open a Bag or via the ‘Add to Bag’ option.
Variable Pricing: Bags will no longer be a fixed price of $29.95 or $49.95. Instead, the price will vary based on the 1st Pick Item. Bags will start at $11.95 and will continue to include stylist picks. In time, this means we will be able to offer leather handbags, shoes and higher end designer brands!
More Trading Time: All bags will have 7 days of trading.
VIP Gifts: VIP’s will receive gift and promo items in their bags whenever we run a promotion.
Skipping: Existing members still have the option to Skip a month, as long as you don’t cancel your membership.

The new VIP Membership program is less expensive and allows us to introduce even more exciting merchandise into the site!

A Couple Changes for All Customers

Shipping

Occasionally, shipping companies raise prices to cover increases in gas and other expenses. Given our already low prices, we need to pass these on as well and will be increasing our shipping rates as follows:

Economy/Standard/Expedited: +$1.00

AK/HI/Puerto Rico/APO: $11.95 fixed

Add to Bag Items: $0.49 - $0.99 based on the item category

Additionally, our shipping company has increased our receiving and warehouse fees. To cover this, we will be implementing a $1.95 refund restocking fee/item. Exchanges will NOT have a restocking fee.

Note that our shipping & restocking refund rates are still significantly lower than most eCommerce companies. As a point of comparison, Macy’s, which is a full priced retailer and charges more per items, charges $9.95 for Standard shipping on orders under $99. They don’t offer a lower cost option, whereas LBB offers a $5.95 economy option via Newgistics, which takes a little longer but offers our customers a lower priced option not offered by many other companies. As a point of comparison with restocking fees, JustFab charges $5.95 in restocking fees per item, so we are still well below that.

Exchanges

Lastly, the #1 customer suggestion over the last few months has been to improve the way our exchange policy works. Currently, when you exchange an item we give you another item of similar value. Many of our customers have told us they dislike some of these exchange items and furthermore they dislike having to open a new bag to get their exchange item. Additionally, LBB has seen a significant increase in the amount of fraudulent activity based on exploiting our current exchange policy.

In order to improve the exchange policy, we will now make it possible for YOU to select the exchange item that YOU want. Going forward, when exchanging an item, you will now get an Exchange Merchandise Credit that you can use to Open a bag or via the ‘Add to Bag’ option. No more getting exchange items you dislike and no more fraud. Here is how exchange credits will work:

We will calculate the Exchange Credit by pro-rating the retail value of the Exchange Items against the amount you paid for your Little Black Bag (not including shipping and handling or tax). For example, suppose you exchanged an item with a retail value of $40, the total retail value of your bag is $120 and and you paid $49.95 for your bag.

$40 Exchange Item Retail Value / $120 Total Bag Retail Value = 33.3% Exchange Percentage

33.3% Exchange Percentage X $49.95 Total Paid = $16.63 Exchange Credit

Exchanges for ‘Add to Bag’ Items

If you purchased an item using our ‘Add to Bag’ feature and would like to exchange it, you will get back an exchange credit for the amount that you paid for the item. If you traded away an item purchased with the ‘Add to Bag’ feature, then the amount you paid for the ‘Add to Bag’ item will be added to your Total Paid. You will then receive the prorated Exchange Credit determined by the calculation above.

Exchanges for Gift Items

If you gift an item into a new bag, the “Paid Value” of that gifted item will get transferred into the new bag on a pro-rated basis. For example, suppose you have a $120 Retail Value Bag and you gift a $40 item into a new bag with just that single item.

$40 Retail Value of Gifted Item / $120 Total Bag Retail Value = 33.3% Exchange Percentage

33.3% Exchange Percentage X $49.95 Total Paid = $16.63 Eligible Exchange Credit added to the New Bag

Then, if you Exchange that $40 item you will get $16.63 of Exchange Credit. This ensures that the value of a gifted item gets transferred into a new bag.

There are a few important elements to note about the new Exchange Credit policy:

You can use the Exchange Merchandise Credit to Open a bag or via the ‘Add to Bag’ option. This means that YOU select the exchange item that YOU want.
The amount of Exchange Merchandise Credit that we give must be based on the amount paid or else we continue to open ourselves up to significant fraudulent activity. For obvious reasons I won’t get into the details of how this occurs but as it stands with our current exchange policy we have suffered from significant fraudulent activity and this change prevents that activity going forward. The easiest way to think about this is based on the following observation: if you paid $50 and we made it possible to get back more than $50 of credit from the site via the exchange policy, then we would open ourselves up to significant fraud in a variety of different ways.
Unused Exchange Items will be converted to Exchange Merchandise Credit using the formula above on Wednesday, March 27 @ Midnight PST.

Gift Cards

All previously purchased Gift Cards will be converted into Merchandise Credit for the amount that you paid. For example, a $49.95 Gift Card will be converted into $49.95 worth of Merchandise Credit that you can use to Open a Bag or via the “Add to Bag” feature.

Sales

Currently, if you open a bag while we are running a sale, you may get a sale item as your stylist pick. In these cases we give incremental retail value to make up for the fact the item is on sale. However, we have received a lot of feedback saying it would be better if we didn’t put sale items in as stylist picks at all. Going forward, we will not put sale items in as stylist picks!

As those of you that have seen me on chat know, I am committed to ensuring that we constantly work on improving the LBB experience. In the last few weeks we have rolled out a major set of improvements to the Trading experience, significantly increased the speed of the site, launched our “Lucky Bag” giveaway program, run a couple of awesome sales, significantly improved our Canadian shipping experience and launched fantastic promos with NuMe, Fusion and Sebastian. We are thrilled by the improvements from the new VIP Program and our enhanced Exchange policy.
